Working with performer Sooty Divine, this project set out to move beyond the traditional portrait by capturing not a single pose, but the energy that exists between moments. Rather than freezing movement, the camera records its passage through time, revealing gestures and rhythms that are normally invisible to the eye.
This series was also an exploration of composition. I was interested in using movement to shape the frame itself—allowing the body, flowing fabric and light to create dynamic forms that fill the image with balance, tension and flow. Each exposure became a collaboration between photographer and performer, where timing, improvisation and trust were just as important as technical precision.
The resulting images are not intended to document a performance. Instead, they seek to express the feeling of movement itself—its elegance, strength and spontaneity. They invite the viewer to experience the traces of motion rather than a single frozen instant.
As with much of my work, this project asks a different question from traditional portraiture. Rather than asking What does this performer look like?, it asks What does this movement feel like? The photographs become less about recording a performance and more about interpreting the emotion and energy that unfold within it.
